SGML stands for "Standard Generalized Markup Language" and is sort of the
parent language to HTML (SGML is really a meta-language).
XML stands for "Extensible Markup Language" and is a modern spin-off of SGML
with strong emerging Java and Perl support (as well as other popular
languages).
