I’m sure he’d enjoy looking at the layouts, but from reading the event schedule, it sounds like a lot of stuff which would be interesting to me but boring to him (talks from LEGO bigwigs, building competitions he can’t participate in, etc.). I haven’t been to BrickFest before, but I gather that it’s really geared towards ALEs – the schedule even mentions a special session for enthusiasts aged 12-17, which rather implies that participants under 12 aren’t expected.

Should I leave my son at home? Bring him just to the Sunday general admission? Or give him the full weekend?

Many thanks,

For a 4-year old, the Sunday general admission time should be adequate time to satisfy their thirst for LEGO. Keep in mind that BrickFest is a hands-off event for the most part and, as you can see, there are no activities or events planned for young children.

I have attended several train shows with my LEGO club and I can tell you that 45 minutes to an hour is plenty of time for a 4-year old to enjoy the LEGO that he can only look-at-but-not-touch. After that, the fun is gone and a youngsters frustration will emerge.

One alternative is the LEGOLAND parts which are designed for children as the primary audience.

Other alternatives may exist locally for you at such places as community centers, day-care centers, public libraries, or children’s museums where LEGO activities are planned specifically for young children. If such activities do not yet exist, perhaps suggesting them will give the programmers some good ideas.

(...) My 4-year-old may be unusual; at a NILTC show last year, he spent about 6 hours on Saturday (with a break for lunch) and another 3 hours on Sunday studying the layouts. So did I, for that matter – there was a lot to see. But your point may be (...) (19 years ago, 14-Jul-05, to lugnet.events.brickfest, FTX)
