(...) that part (and it's name) come from partsref - we try to use partsref names whenever we can, unless it's for a part that isn't available as a dat yet. But even for X numbers (our custom parts), we will eventually rename them to whatever the (...) (23 years ago, 12-May-02, to lugnet.db.brictionary)

(URL) would what you're saying allow more obvious names like "worm gear" - as I think of it, because that's what it logically interacts with and looks like to me, at least - help me to find that name for a part often used in gear-reduction (...) (23 years ago, 12-May-02, to lugnet.db.brictionary)

I'm not going to quote it because I agree with it in total. I'd like to add some related thoughts that have been nagging at me ever since I first encountered Brick{Bay,Link} and LDraw... I like the idea of better indexing, and would be happy to incorporate any new method into peeron - now someone just has to write it :) I know that indexing by a non-unique field (which is the part number) is a bad thing - it's just the easiest and (...)
