Thats certainly true. Its really frustrating to have a mere handful of
parts in some color (for instance, I think I have exactly two purple 1x2
bricks from some Harry Potter set and no other purple (leaving aside some
minifig torsos)), so you can never build MOCs with these color schemes. I
suppose the answer is that I should get more creator buckets and odd sets
like the pumpkin set or Belville sets to get more odd colors.

I dont think its fair to say that you could never build a MOC with those
color schemes. I built this house with only purple parts from 6 copies of the
Mini Knights Bus. Id guess that you could
build a house from one copy of the larger
bus.
Ive purposely gone out of my way to build houses in strange colors, using a
limited palate of pieces. Colors used so far:
Medium Blue,
Sand Blue,
Maersk Blue, Purple,
Light Yellow,
Teal. The medium blue
house uses 1x4s and maybe some 1x2s, the light yellow was just 1x2s and a few
2x4s, the teal is all 1x2s. I think I had a broader choice of pieces in Maersk,
but those werent my bricks.
I guess Im just trying to say that you can build creations in strange colors,
but the pieces you have will shape the creation some.
