What really confuses me is the very small number of 2x4 bricks I have
in "odd" colors.  If I sorted my 1x1 or 1x2 bricks, or any of my plates, in
addition to certain major colors, there would be a bunch of small numbers of
elements from "odd" colors (all the sands, trans, and darks, things like
purple and orange, etc)--you know, one of this, 5 of that, etc.  Now, I've
got a relatively large number of sets, from across a variety of themes, so
you would expect that I'd have a ton of bricks in random colors, but it seems
not. Looking at <http://www.peeron.com/inv/parts/3001 Peeron>, it seems that
the 2x4 brick has actually not been offered in a lot of colors.  This seems
odd--the 2x4 brick is perhaps the most readily recognized LEGO element to the
non-AFOL population, so you'd expect it to be ubiquitous, but it seems to not
be so.

Actually, according to Peeron, it's the piece that has the 3rd most available
colors!

http://www.peeron.com/cgi-bin/invcgis/reports/simple.cgi?mode=ColorPart

Rank    Number   Part Name              # of Colors
---------------------------------------------------
1       3005  Brick 1 x 1                40
2       3004  Brick 1 x 2                38
3       3001  Brick 2 x 4                37
4       3020  Plate 2 x 4                36
5       3023  Plate 1 x 2                35
6       4073  Plate 1 x 1 Round          34
7       4740  Round Dish 2 x 2 Inverted  33
8       3010  Brick 1 x 4                33
9       3710  Plate 1 x 4                33
10      3003  Brick 2 x 2                33

So, according to that, only the 1x1 brick and 1x2 brick are available in more
colors! And, according to MyParts (and some stuff I know I have, which is pretty
accurate), I've got ... 29 of 'em:

Black: 630
Blue: 475
Brown: 446
Chrome Silver: 2
Clear: 4
Dark Gray: 711
Dark Green: 4
Dark Orange: 48
Dark Pink: 24
Dark Red: 6
Dark Stone: 21
Gray: 2929
Green: 168
Lime: 30
Lt Royal Blue: 6
Light Yellow: 12
Maersk Blue: 4
Medium Lilac: 4
Medium Stone: 40
Orange: 98
Purple: 4
Red:  662
Reddish Brown: 7
Sand Blue: 9
Sand Green: 424
Tan: 326
Teal: 13
White: 3180
Yellow: 512

And 8 known colors that I'm missing:
Cool Yellow: 0
FabuOrange: 0
Light Stone: 0
Light Pink: 0
Medium Blue: 0
Medium Violet: 0
Pink: 0
Sand Red: 0

Usually those colors come in odd sets (Fabuland, Belville, Paradisa, Basic
tubs), so if you don't have a lot of those, it might explain some things. About
how many sets/pieces are in your collection?

(...) Wow, that's a surprise. I guess when I looked at the color table on Peeron I mainly was struck by the fact that up until a few years ago the 2x4 brick was only in a small number of colors. This does seem to have changed in the past couple of (...) (19 years ago, 25-May-05, to lugnet.color, FTX)

  2x4 brick colors

Hi all, I was just sorting my bucket of 2x4 bricks. I put them in 4x4 stacks by color, then break those stacks into 20 brick units. Anyway, I'm obsessive enough to count them, and this is what I got: Light gray: 418 Black: 338 Red: 176 Dark gray: (...) (19 years ago, 25-May-05, to lugnet.color)
