Hey, that is pretty nice, now that you mention it. :)

I tried to turn up the brightness to emphasize this, but that washes
out the grays, so you really have to look close to see him.

You could just select the black area around Fortunatos head (either selecting
by hand, or the magic wand tool set to low tolerance would probably do the
trick), and then adjust the brightness on only that section of the image, not
affecting the rest of the image.
