I was thinking about this too ... it's ripe for some beautiful creativity.

Two types of mills I can think of:

1)  Wind-Powered Mill
2)  Water-Powered Mill

The first can be your standard Don-Quixote type, shaped more or less like a
lighthouse with the big spinning blades to catch the wind and grind the grist (?? -
statement made for alliterative enjoyment rather than technical bakground).
Historically, I'm not sure whether these were found in medieval England or not, but
they were certainly on the continent ... I know there's one in Ireland still
standing, but I don't know when it was active

The second was basically a big wooden barn with the typical water wheel in the
river on the side ... through plenty of mechanical engineering creativity
(oooohhhhh, aaaahhhhh) the rotation was conveyed to a large mill stone.

I don't have any pictures, and I don't prefess to be an authority on mills, by any
means.  I'm just trying to recall the pictures I've seen, and the few mills I've
visited (one of the windmill-types, but mostly from colonial/imperial times - have
they changed that much?)

Have you tried looking for pictures in the newsgroup
alt.fan.historical.breadmaking.ingredients.large-machinery?

Actually, I'm just planning on building another larger building. My problem
with building houses is that after building 7 houses (5 in white w/ black
trim), I've nearly RUN OUT of 1x1 black bricks!!! (yes, the impossible has
happened! Each house uses over 70, so roughly 370 total used so far) I've still
got a bunch left, but not enough to do another large structure completely.

So what I was thinking is building something half timbered and half stone... So
my first thought was a mill... But that led me to wonder, what in the world
does a mill LOOK like? Can someone point me at some pictures or perhaps provide
some advice? Maybe it shouldn't be a mill, but another type of building? Ideas
anyone?

Speaking of mills. I have discovered another use for those brown wing pieces in the Star Wars Droid Fighter Sets. Windmill blades. The cool thing is that on a good, freely spinning hub/axle they actually work. When you blow on them the blades spin. (...) (25 years ago, 27-Jan-00, to lugnet.castle)
