Thanks Lars, Rosco and Tim.
At last, I found what was wrong. I ran msconfig and discovered a junk character
presented as a "wide pipe" (or black rectangle) at the end of LDRAWDIR line. It
is also visible in original MS Notepad, but not in NoteTab, which I recently
switched over to.

I have no idea how that thing has landed there, but after removing it, L3P works
as before.

Though (URL) might give the opposite impression L3P first uses LDRAWDIR if set, otherwise it looks (...) (18 years ago, 23-Apr-07, to lugnet.cad.ray)
