Yes, that would certainly work. And for correct alignment of studs, it will
sometimes be the only answer. For example, some parts (30373 is one of
them) use mirror symmetry to create a subpart that is a fraction (like 1/4
or 1/8) of the entire part, and the complete part is built up from multiple
references to the subpart, usually with rotation and/or mirroring.
Obviously, any studs in the subpart file are going to be turned or reversed
at some point.
Unfortunately, this approach requires more work on the part of the author,
and it's likely that not everyone would be willing to do it. I don't feel
that "straight studs" should be a requirement parts in the ldraw.org library.
