  I've experienced this same problem. As Gary correctly points out in
another reply, the floor is infinite, but it's possible to position the
camera so low relative to the floor that the floor slices through the • "lens"
of the camera; since there's nothing underneath the floor (not even a • light
source), the area shows up as black space.  I don't have specifics, and I
can't make ironclad claims about this, but I've noticed that if you raise
the camera higher above the floor, you can avoid this black "cut-off" • area.
Changing the angle between camera and look_at might also help, but I • haven't
played around with that.

That was indeed the case.  I fiddled with the camera position and look at
and finally got the look I wanted.
