How should all the various bits be named and where should they be stored?

There isn't always a flat rule for every case.  And we'e got plenty of 'legacy'
files that don't conform to current rules.

That's why I want to know for sure what to do for new authored parts.
(I can't always look how existing parts were done, as these may not be conform
to current rules, like you said.)

(In following examples YYYY is the main part number (YYYY.dat))

* ABS/CA molds (like doorframe, glass, upper and lower housing, etc.)
- Name: unique ####.dat for each bit or YYYYs##.dat?

Generally, a unique number for each file.  If we don't know any of the numbers,
then we might use s-suffixes on a single 3DN for the different files.

Many windows have just a simple rectangular glass piece, which is glued to the
frame on the real part. Many ldraw parts have the glass box inlined with the
frame in one file. Some doors/windows even have just a single rectangle as
glass, I think these are likely to be updated using a box or something. (I've
read that there's a major update on classic windows in the pipeline.)

- Folder: Parts or Parts/S?

Most likely Parts, since each bit will have a LEGO-given number (even if we
don't know the number).

I have a hold vote on the plastic part of the 2x4 lightbrick that his should be
in the Parts/S folder
(http://www.ldraw.org/cgi-bin/ptdetail.cgi?f=parts/x322.dat)
(The hold vote is also for identical lines, but I first want to have this Parts
vs. Parts/S thing solved before I submit a fixed version of this file).

* Metal bits (like connectors and such)
- Name: YYYYs##.dat
- Folder: Parts/S

Yes.  Especially for electrical bits.

* Complete assembly door/window + glass
- Name: YYYYc##.dat or YYYY.dat?

This isn't open to question - YYYYc##

- Folder: Parts

* Complete assembly ABS/CA + metal bits
- Name: YYYY.dat or YYYYc##.dat?

Hmm.  Depends on whether there are 1 or multiple plastic parts.

Okay, splitting this into two possibilities:

* Complete assembly of single ABS/CA + various metal bits
- Name: YYYY.dat?
- Folder: Parts

* Complete assembly of multiple ABS/CA + various metal bits
- Name: YYYYc##.dat
- Folder: Parts

* Shortcuts (door/window + removable glass, lightbrick with removable bulb,
etc.)
- Name: YYYYc##.dat
- Folder: Parts

Anything I've missed?

Oh, probably. ;)

Niels

(...) SNIP (...) For to solve the hold vote on this part, I think, that the current x322.dat should go into the s/ folder because this is not a PART that I can buy. So the file with the metal portion should be instead x322.dat and with the light (...) (17 years ago, 7-Oct-07, to lugnet.cad.dat.parts)
