While this is not really for public consumption, see this page anyway:

The part described is non-official lego element; and this illustration was
created by me to see how easy/hard it would be to explain DAT authoring to a
novice.  The element illustrated is my Lady Blacktron torso as designed by me
and DAT-authored by great Lego pal Tony Hafner (98% Tony's work) -- there's a
weeny amount of DAT authoring there on my part.

The main thing to note is the "wire-frame" of the design. See all the bits
outlined in black, yellow, and white? All those lines and shapes need to be
defined in the DAT file to replace the three quads that would otherwise exist
in
the same space as in step 2.

I hope this helps.

That is a great explanation, and its exactly what I did.  Its reassuring
to me that a couple of my more creative solutions, are probably the best
way to take care of the issues I had.

my only thing left to do is place the two circular areas on this part.
they are dithered from dark to light in the center though, and I was
wondering if there is a typical solution to this problem?

Coding dat parts is fun, but it is not for the faint of heart.  what was
nice about the peice i worked on, is that once you do one side i just
reused the coordinates for the other side with the deletion of a couple
of - signs.

btw you can see the part in a render i did last night while i slept.

any help with this circular dithered area would be greatly appreciated.

also should i do something with this part now that its partially made?

thanks

(...) You might consider a series of concentric rings of different colors. If you don't mind the ongoing POV-primitive debate, or are only interested in using the part yourself, you could make the dat file show a solid grey circle for normal dat (...) (...) I'm just guessing here, but there's probably NOT a way to do this via LDraw proper. On the other hand, there's probably a way to make it work in POV-Ray, I just don't know how... (...)
