how do you apply graphics to an existing peice like oh say.
http://www.peeron.com/inv/parts/30249px1
i'll totally do it if someone can point me to the info on how.

First, read the various FAQs on LDraw.org's site.

Second, make a copy of the "main" DAT file; in this case, make a copy of
"30249.dat".

Then, open up your favorite text editor (I like Notepad), and load in your copy
of the DAT file.

In another window, open up your favorite LCAD renderer (I like L3Lab and MLCAD),
and have it display your copy of the DAT file.

The areas that you want to change will probably be either a type "3" LDraw
command or a type "4".  (If this doesn't make sense, then you haven't read the
FAQs yet...)

To find which specific area you'll need to "code out", you can change the color
code of various possible lines in your copy of the DAT file, save these changes
in your text editor (**after** setting your renderer to "New" File), and then
re-load the (changed) DAT file into the renderer.

FWIW, this is how I started, by just playing around with copied DAT files...
