The decoration colouring on the regular horses is as follows
White : Eye pupil - black, Eye hightlight - base colour, Eye ring - not
present, Bridle - Brown, Bridle buckles - black with base colour centres

Brown : Eye pupil - black, Eye hightlight - base colour, Eye ring - not
present, Bridle - Maroon, Bridle buckles - black with base colour centres

Black : Eye pupil - base colour, Eye hightlight - base colour, Eye ring -
white, Bridle - Brown, Bridle buckles - white with base colour centres

Common: The "standard" head has:
eye pupil    : black
eye highlight: base color

Additionally:
Only the black horse has a white ring.
newer(?) brown horses has a black mane and some older(?) a base colored.
White, brown and black horses have different colored bridles.

The indian horses (white and brown) (in '98 catalouge) have other patterns:
- the brown has a white eye highlight,
- white and brown have eyelid and white around the pupil
- bridle and dapple of white and brown are different
- body pattern

So I think, at the moment we have 6 different horse heads:
Black - normal
White - normal
White - indian
Brown - normal, base mane
Brown - normal, black mane
Brown - indian

The only common they have:
black eye pupil

So what is the best splitting of the head files?

Sascha

(...) This is a tricky puzzle, but due to the size of the files it is a good idea to minimise duplication. I would organise the files like this : Split your 4492 into: - s\4492s01 containing all the head definition except the sides of the face - (...) (23 years ago, 3-Dec-01, to lugnet.cad.dat.parts)

(...) I've only got two horses handy (one white, one black), but it looks like they've got the same color bridle, but the ink/paint isn't completely opaque. So it looks darker on the black than the white. In general, the bridles look like the same (...) (23 years ago, 4-Dec-01, to lugnet.cad.dat.parts)
