My personal (perfectionist) preference would be to remove the mark from

Right.

Since 973.dat would be the only file without a neckmark, it makes sense to
keep the 3/4 neck in s\973s01.dat, and have each torso file supply the
remaining 2-4cyli.dat with whatever color was appropo.

Since I have authored the majority of the torsos, I feel a responsibility to • do
this (wishing I'd challenged the status quo when I started).

Have a go at it, if you want.  Although I still feel a certain ownership of
the core torso design...

I'd need to check
that this does not create more varients where we have hardcoded the torso
colour.

Good point.  Doing a very small survey, it appears that nearly all neck
marks are either black or white.  Which limits the potential impact.

It appears there are three torso-files where the base torso is fixed-color:

973p11.dat    Minifig Torso with Dungarees Pattern
973p65.dat    Minifig Torso with Futuron Pattern
973p15.dat    Minifig Torso with Horizontal Stripes Pattern

Steve

I have commented the neck mark area out of s\973s01.dat - actually it is only a
1/4 cylinder.

0 Uncomment for neck mark
0 1 16 0 -4 0 4.243 0 -4.243 0 -8 0 -4.243 0 -4.243 1-4cyli.dat

and will today be sending the amended subpart and the fixes to all the
currently approved torsos to Steve. These inlcude this extra line setting the
neck-mark colour appropriately.

If other authors have torsos in-the-pipeline (ie. submitted for voting), could
you please make this small amendment and resubmit.

Below I summarise the neck mark colours I applied to the existing torsos, but
this has raised some issues (detailed below).

Some torsos exist with more than one colour neck mark, but I think it would be
pedantic in the extreme to model both versions.

973P26 (Patch pocket) has White or Black on the Blue version and White on the
Black version - so I have coded white as being usable for both.

973P27 (Autoroute) exists in White or Black - I have arbitrarily coded White

973P46 (Forestman and Purse Pattern) has Black or Silver on the green version
and black on the Grey version - so I have coded Black as being usable for both.

973P48/49 (Maroon/Blue collared Forestmen) have Silver or Black (and maybe the
Black version does too) - I have arbitrarily coded Black

973P90 (Classic Space) has Black on the Red/Blue/Yellow versions, but White on
the Black version - I have coded Black, which means the Black version is
inaccurate.

As per Chris' instructions, I just sent updated copies of the three minifig torsos I've done (p45, "Studded Armor [Fright Knights]; p70, "Bomber Jacket [Town]"; and, p102, "SW Rebel Mechanic") to Steve. Since the change is to the neck, which isn't (...) (24 years ago, 5-Nov-00, to lugnet.cad)

Thank you, Chris! I think you made good choices where there are conflicting neck-colors. Did you note these issues in the part files? Also, would you mind making a 937p00.dat file, "Minifig Torso with Neck Mark Pattern"? Steve (24 years ago, 6-Nov-00, to lugnet.cad)

(...) Great! I see you have discussed the neck-mark in lugnet.cad.dat.parts and come up with a brilliant solution. The neck-mark has always been a PITA to me; it is THE ONLY linetype 1 we have with color 24. POV has no notion of a "reverse" color (...) (24 years ago, 6-Nov-00, to lugnet.cad)
