Yes, I did.  The problem appears to be that files from the LUGNET web
interface don't have the ".dat" extension, but called "ldraw",
"ldraw(1)", "ldraw(2)" and so on.

Hmm.  What client are you using, and what URLs are you accessing?  The names
"ldraw", "ldraw(1)", "ldraw(3)", etc. don't come from the webserver -- it
doesn't specify a filename.

(...) I'm using Internet Explorer 4.0 on Windows NT platform (yes, this is at work, I would never use such a thing at home). The URLs I'm accessing are the ones you get by clicking on the "[DAT]" symbol in the LUGNET web interface, eg: (URL) I try (...) (25 years ago, 17-Apr-00, to lugnet.cad)
