You’re welcome ;o)

What is the preferred modeling tool for creating LDraw parts? Having a quick look around it seems that SolidWorks is mentioned quite frequently.

This is a possibility, using stl2dat converter. But the problem with this kind of tools is that it requires careful planning to make good use of LDraw primitives that provide compact code and better rendering.

That’s the reason why I use more basic tools, mainly:
  • MLCad to build parts frame, place and size various primitives (you better stick with 3.2 version, 3.3 is buggy for parts authoring)

  • LDView to get a better rendering of the part as it is built, as well as check BFC.

  • My own set of tools to create intersections, warped surface fillings, conditional lines, patterns on non-flat surfaces...), along with LETGUI for a user interface more comfortable than command line.

  • LDDP as a ldraw oriented text editor to put bits and pieces together

  • DatHeader to format LDraw header and auto-correct many errors.
More recently, to create “organic” shapes such as Fabuland heads I have started to use another set of tools:
  • DAVID laser scanner free edition to acquire the shape

  • Sculptris to sharpen the edges of scanned shapes, in order to be able to place outlining edge lines

  • Meshlab to reduce polygon count to a manageable number
Hope to see you soon in LDraw parts author pool !

Philo

Thanks for the summary of tools. Following on from my recent post "Lego - Anakin's Jedi Starfighter 7669", what's the best tool for adding a sticker to an existing part? I've started experimenting with BMP2Ldraw32 to create a sticker DAT file. (...) (14 years ago, 17-Jul-10, to lugnet.cad, FTX)

Well done to everyone who's contributed to the parts update. Keep up the great work. I've just had a quick browse of the updated parts and I can already see a part I need for my Police Car model - (URL) is the preferred modeling tool for creating (...) (14 years ago, 12-Jul-10, to lugnet.cad)
