I don't know how to do so in POV, but the problem would probably be mitigated
somewhat if you increased the amount of ambient light. This would make the
darker parts less dark, but still leave you with some shading to see the 3D
shape. If you have LDView, you can see an example of this by looking at the
difference between standard lighting and subdued lighting in LDView. Subdued
lighting there has substantially higher ambient light.
