Well, probably won't make you feel any better, but have you checked any
official LEGO instructions lately?

No it doesn't and Yes I have ;-)

Perhaps "shadows" is not the right word.  It's more the different intensity of
the reflected light (see
http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/whoward69/misc/LPubProblems/foot.jpg).  OK, so
if all the faces were the same intensity you wouldn't be able to tell the shape
of an individual part or where one part ends and another starts, but is that sub
assembly in black or dark grey?  Perhaps I should just go with different
colours.

The issue here is not shadows or reflections.  It is shading.  More ambient
light and less diffuse light should reduce the shading effect.  I'm not at LPub
right now, so I can't tell you if/how to change this.

On another note, I can't get the BOM to scale all the sub-images the same - see
http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/whoward69/misc/LPubProblems/complete_bom.jpg

I think I must have upgraded LPub since my last major foray with it as I'm sure
I never used to get that particular problem (see
http://www.brickish.co.uk/members/files/whoward/Rho_06_BoM.gif for an older LPub
rendering)

many thanks

Any time you see this kind of problem, use the "Erase Part Image Cache" menu and
rebuild things (disable assembly and PLI generation if you want).

On the topic of scale......

I modified LPub so that the rendering of an assembly image and rendering of part
images for PLI and BOM use the same sized window.  This way, if you set the
minimum camera distance the same for assembly and PLI rendering, the bricks
actually come out the same scale.  LEGO does not use the same scale for part
images and assembly images, but if you did want to use the same scale, you will
be able to in the future.

I also modified LPub to figure out when PLI rendering parameters have changed,
so it can automatically erase the cache when things change.

Thanks guys I tweaked ambient up to 0.6 from 0.4 and its definately better I shall see what effect taking difused down has later (and the interaction of the two), but at least I know I can get an acceptable result now. Thanks again William PS - and (...) (20 years ago, 28-Sep-04, to lugnet.cad)
