Because nothing is truly without color; there are things darker than lego black.
Also, using a slightly-less-than-totally-black shade allows outlines to be drawn
with RGB(0,0,0) and still show up (at least, somewhat).
And with shading enabled, black acts more like other colors. If the base RGB
for black was (0,0,0), there would be no way to have a darker shade.

Where did you find this information? I contacted TLG about it, but never got (...) (20 years ago, 10-Feb-05, to lugnet.build.mosaic, FTX)
