To me this is a poor test since the picture is so huge it would be quite a
large piece of work.  I think a truer test of a dithering algorithm is
creating very small yet recognizable mosaics.

Just for fun, I downloaded your image and tried to find the colours you used,
and I came up with the following list:
pink, tan, earth orange, orange, white, medium blue, light yellow, light grey,
grey, dark grey, sand green, dark orange, brown, black, sand red, dark red, red,
green, sand blue, navy blue. Maybe I missed a colour (or missnamed one), and I
didn't find yellow or blue (weird).
If you really have 1x1 bricks/plates in all these colours than I truly envy you
(pink!?!).
I had 1x1 plates in medium blue, light grey, sand green, sand blue (approx. 300
each) - I found them at the bottom of the pick-and-mix boxes in Belgium (5
euro/literbag), so obviously I implemented them in my Level 42-mosaic. But all
the other elements required for that mosaic were bought in Billund last August.
I knew approximately what was available over there, so that is exactly the
reason why I reduced the colour-scheme to black, blue, red, yellow, white, light
grey, grey, dark grey, tan, brown and orange. (and I think I am not the only one
with a restricted amount of colours)

I don't like to make small mosaics (don't know why); so to me this is not a poor
example. Size 160x192 (which is by the way only 6 ministeck baseplates) compared
to 152x310 of my Level 42 mosaic (took me 3 months to build).

And yes, your images look better than mine. If your program is better than mine,
I will not argue with that. Fact is I am not a programmer and I like to make
mosaics. In the end I am very proud of the results of my "program". I tried to
program the Floyd-Steinberg algorythm (with success) which is designed for
computers and printers (colour-reduction = less memory required), not for
artists. I can assure you that I'm still interested in other algorythms... if I
can find them ;-(.
