All, I've got a pretty big (5x8 48 stud baseplate) mosaic that needs to be on permanent display at our local hospital. (...) Hot glue works well and you can peel it off the baseplates later on but it still has a high sheer strength. If you are not worried about recovering the baseplates later on then I would use a construction adhesive. PL300. Its for securing (...) (20 years ago, 22-Oct-04, to lugnet.build.mosaic)

Ralph, I made a mosaic about that size this year. Here are my suggestions. First, I attached the baseplates to a wood backing (8'x6') using extra strengh liquid nails. (...) To get correct stud spacing you need to leave some room between baseplates anyway. If you don't have any bricks/plates spanning more than 1 baseplate, it isn't a problem, but I'd probably do it anyway, just for my aesthetic gratification :) (...)
