Ralph,

I made a mosaic about that size this year.  Here are my suggestions.  First, I
attached the baseplates to a wood backing (8'x6') using extra strengh liquid
nails.  I had experimented with it using a smaller baseplate and a piece of
wood.  After 24 hours I could not, with all my strenth, remove the baseplate
from the wood, and I'm no pip squeak.  :)  I then used the liquid nails to glue
the baseplates to the boards, creating the 8x6 canvas, and the rest was just
building.  Although yours is a little bigger than mine, I'd say mine was heavier
because of the layers we used to create a 3D look.  It is on display in a
museum, in a steel and plexiglass case.  It is mounted off the floor and is
very, very secure.  If I ever made another one, I'd use extra strengh liquid
nails again.  You can buy it at hardware stores for about $2 a tube.  You need
to buy one of those caulking guns too.  Second, when gluing it, I'd leave some
room between the baseplates so expansion and contraction wouldn't be a problem.

Here's some pics:

Good luck,

(...) To get correct stud spacing you need to leave some room between baseplates anyway. If you don't have any bricks/plates spanning more than 1 baseplate, it isn't a problem, but I'd probably do it anyway, just for my aesthetic gratification :) (...) All, I've got a pretty big (5x8 48 stud baseplate) mosaic that needs to be on permanent display at our local hospital. There is an acrylic panel in front to keep little fingers from prying the 1x1s off, but it reduces the tactile feel :-( Anyways, (...) (21 years ago, 22-Oct-04, to lugnet.build.mosaic)
