This is a little late, and probably not overly helpful, but I can say a bit
about them. I own one (it made an appearance at BrickFest '01), which was
given to me by someone who attended a Red Sox game in August 1999.
According to him they were giving them away (no baggies or set #'s, etc,
just loose) at the game, with no accounting for origin, other than "Lego"
signs here and there around the park that day; so probably a Lego-sponsored
event? I'm not sure.
The printing on mine is pretty good, although the red/blue is a little
offset from each other (a bit more than "usual", IIRC), and is otherwise
plain (no printing on the torso's back, legs, arms, hat, etc); with no
keychain holes or otherwise undesireable marks.
As for it being a cancelled promotion? I never heard that part... To the
best of my knowledge it was just a 1-time promo that happened a while ago...
