It's probably more a matter of taste and expediency.
For example, I've changed the heads on all of my bearded warrant
officers for smileys, to turn them into privates. Oh, I had to add
shakos as well :-)
But, speaking entirely hypothetically, if I had a bunch of soldier
torsos but no appropriate heads, and I wanted to sell them as complete
minifigs, and I didn't know much about LEGO, I'd stick any old head on.
It's not just a question of what builders do, but what players do as
well. If someone has a storyline involving a young lady who runs away to
sea in the Marines, they're gonna want a girlie soldier.
Actually, this is a cool idea. What other combinations are there? We
haven't had a good jamming session since Doolittle hit the scene :-)
