Even TLC does it- see the 'figs in the Tine Milk Truck set and the Velux set.
The only thing that worries me about the helmet is the curve- I've never really
seen a sticker that looked sharp applied to a curved surface. Well, a surface
curved in more than one way, anyway (like a dome vs. a curved wall).

I as thinking of doing something similar, making a skull visor for a knight. since don't want to mass produce them I haven't decieded wheather I will use a sand mold method to form a new plastic piece or use a gold astronaut's visor and use (...) (24 years ago, 23-Jan-01, to lugnet.build.minifigs)
