I thought I’d share this as I’ve seen some postings asking about this very sort of building. One of my mechs, Hammer, fell and had a boo boo. Atomized would be the word. So anway I’m taking it all in stride and building a new mech. I’m gonna call this one Anvil.

But what’s interesting, so far, is the hip. There are three technic turntables and eight wormed gears in the hip. Three axis rotation on each leg mount, the torso will twist and a torso tilt, side to side. I managed to get most of it into a small area, that’s the thing.

The other aspect that is new here for me is the side to side motion of the body. The technic shocks come into play for that. (I’m hoping they don’t get totally covered in the final) Yeah, they look cool, but they are helping to support the body when tilted, taking some of the stress off the gears and the bricks they are attached to. Yeah, two springs is way overkill for what you see now, but once a body gets built on there, it’ll be plenty adequate.

Hmmm, I aught to mention. the turntables sitting way up there, those are shoulders. The chest will be going in that big void in the middle. Anti-hippy equipent will also be added.

So this is kind of new for me, these are work in progress pics to help give others the “inside scoop” of how one of my mechs gets made and maybe help those that don’t know how to do this stuff.

Link to the gallery afte r moderation. But there ain’t much there execpt these two pics.

I’ll be happy to entertain questions reqarding construction, functionality, my plans, or whatever else you may want to know.

Mark

You are so the man! Look at that. It is the formula. e (19 years ago, 14-Jan-05, to lugnet.build.mecha)

(...) Mark, thanks for the post since I have been the one that has been asking. I'm not sure if I should smile or cry ... it's so beautiful. I caught my first glimpse of it this morning on Brickshelf! Seeing the inner-workings on a project like this (...) (19 years ago, 14-Jan-05, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)

Some very cool hip technology there, being able to splay the hip turntables out. And the waist mechanisms are packed tightly in there - a lot of functionality in a small package. It would be good to mention as a mecha builder tip that when you build (...) (19 years ago, 15-Jan-05, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)

Just a couple of comments. First, that is a great idea for the toes! I like your style of having two or three toes fanned out claw-style, but I didn't like how it seemed to flatten the feet out, I always thought they'd look better with a little more (...) (...) Not another chicken walker. Sheesh, talk about old hat. ;) In all seriousness, that hip joint is a real eye opener. Thanks. You only have the two axes of rotation in the ankles, yes? And is the thigh rotation also worm geared? Cheers, Allister (19 years ago, 16-Jan-05, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)
