I nevcer noticed this with the ones that came in my 8880 or mindstorms - that's all the newer technic I have, tho. :) I do find that worm gears nowadays slide on axles as if they were worm gears. The loop on the old version was narrow enough that if you put a 1x1 tile on each side, the resulting width was exactly the same as a 1x brick in width.... the new version (...)
