How about the other direction? Are there other pieces that will allow
connection of two studs 180 degrees opposed?

well, an ugly solution would be to use 1x1 Plates w/ Horiz. Side Loop.
This causes some problems, though, because the cylindrical part between the
opposing studs on the loop won't match the smooth face of the bricks you'll be
connecting. Maybe that's not a problem for you, but you'll still have to take
into account the 1x1 Plate attached to the Side Loop.

Sometimes I deal with the problem by using old style, broken 1x1 Plates w/
Horiz. Side Loop. Since they're broken where the plate attaches to the loop, I
don't have to worry about an unwanted 1x1 sticking out of my structure, and
since they're the older style, the cylindrical part is shorter and less
obtrusive. (I assume the new style of this piece was introduced because the old
ones kept breaking in the same place. I have about a half-dozen broken old
style pieces like this, but the new style is pretty sturdy.)

On the subject of piece alteration by TLG, though, what's the deal eith the
newer 1x1 plates w/ side clips? The old ones never broke on me, so I never
understood why TLG felt the need to update the piece. Moreover, the new ones
don't grip nearly as tightly as the old ones, thus compromising a builder's
ability to make sturdy hinges with the rod/clip system. On the bright side, it
looks like the Star Wars sets expand on the rod/clip system, with brick-mounted
clips that resemble the 1x1 tiles w/top clips. Still, I can't help but whine
about the flimsy side clips...

(...) I think so too, but even so, TLG hasn't departed from their module... The loop on the old version was narrow enough that if you put a 1x1 tile on each side, the resulting width was exactly the same as a 1x brick in width.... the new version (...) (26 years ago, 13-Jan-99, to lugnet.build)
