I've typically used a 2x2 turntable plate (<part:3679> and <part:3680>)
stiffened with a semi-thick piece of paper between the two halves. The trick
is to get the paper just thick enough; your typical college-ruled school paper
is too thin, but cardboard is obviously too thick. I've found some grades of
xerographic paper that work really well.
As for stiffening Technic pins that run parallel to the axes of the studs,
I've decided to just go ahead and stiffen any old joint, whether or not it
uses a part intended to be loose. For your scenario, you can use a 2x2 tile
or plate with vertical pin (<part:2476> or <part:2460>) and stiffen those with
paper, teflon tape, or plastic wrap.

| Eric, Mark: yes I knew about Diaclone for most of the Autobots (and Microman, I believe it was called, for the majority of the 1st wave of Decepticons). That's actually partly the reason for why I insisted that minifigs fit into all my Transformers (...) (24 years ago, 15-Sep-00, to lugnet.build)
