Actually, I had decided to go very big on a pyramid, which I finished last
weekend. After building a pyramid on a 48x48 baseplate (nice sounding drum,
by the way), went for an 80-stud wide pyramid, built upon a 48x48 surrounded
by a ring of 16x32's. The baseplates themselves help to stabilise the
structure,
but most importantly is how the bricks overlap. (I always use 2x4's in my
pyramids). The first one I built, I just wrapped them around, level by
level.
That created tremendous instability, as seams ran down the sides
facilitating
collapse of the walls. A 2x4 inner structure stopped that, but I now find it
best to ensure a 2x2x2 overlap...forgive crap ascii.....

The old config just seemed to be the most logical way to build it.....
The new config eliminates the instability by not creating fault lines.
Alternating level corners utilise 1x3 bricks to fill in the holes left by
this config, which in turn reinforce the corners.
The insides also have 2x4's, in order to further reinforce the walls. I
currently have a 40 brick high pyramid, which is 80 studs wide at the base.
But being built on baseplates, who knows how stable it would be without
them!
The walls are 4 studs thick (except somewhere near 28th level from bottom,
when
I ran out....uses nearly 2500 2x4's!)with 5 stud thick walls in the middle
somewhere.
No plates or columns used to enforce at any point.
