One nit I had heard in this story is that original gauge is 4 ft 8
rather than 4 8 1/2... when the first engines were imported here to the
states the gauge was widened a bit to allow for sloppy tolerances.

What's even stranger is that the (canadian) horse drawn cart 'gauge' is 4 10
1/2, rather than 4 8 1/2.  How do I know this?  because the TTC (thats the
Toronto Transit Corp) uses 4 10 1/2 rather than standard gauge for the
streetcars.  Why?  because when it was started, the city said they had to, so
anyone could drop a carrage into the rails, and it wouldn't be damaged. (c
1880's, back when it was TRC)

(...) Don't think so, if the engines were coming from the UK. Standard gauge there is 4' 8 1/2" and as far as I know has always been. Kevin (25 years ago, 31-Oct-99, to lugnet.trains, lugnet.build)
