I checked out the low-end modelling market (Wal-Mart) and saw these scales:

automobile -- 1:24 and 1:25
sci-fi -- 1:48 (O scale)
military aircraft -- 1:72 1:48
naval (special on RMS Titanic :-P) -- 1:570

So, taking that and some great stuff from Frank and revising my list:

1:22.5 = G scale
- 1x4 brick = 2' 4.125" long
1:24 = automobiles, etc.
- 1x4 brick = 2' 6" long
1:25 = automobiles, etc.
- 1x4 brick = 2' 7.25" long
1:33 = wargaming 54mm
- 1x4 brick = 3' 5.25" long
1:35 = military, etc
- 1x4 brick = 3' 7.75" long
1:42 = Minifig scale
- 1x4 brick = 4' 4.5" long
1:48 = O scale
- 1x4 brick = 5' long
1:64 = S scale and wargaming 28mm
- 1x4 brick = 6' 8" long
1:72 = OO scale, military aircraft, etc
- 1x4 brick = 7' 6" long
1:87.1 = HO scale
- 1x4 brick = 9' 0.875" long
1:120 = TT scale, wargaming 15mm
- 1x4 brick = 12' 6" long
1:160 = N scale
- 1x4 brick = 16' 8" long
1:220 = Z scale
- 1x4 brick = 22' 11" long
1:285 = military microminiatures, etc.
- 1x4 brick = 29' 8.25" long
1:570 = naval, etc.
- 1x4 brick = 59' 4.5" long
1:600 = naval, etc.
- 1x4 brick = 62' 6" long
1:1200 = naval, etc.
- 1x4 brick = 125' long
1:2400 = naval, etc.
- 1x4 brick = 250' long

Some individual Lego modellers' stuff:

1:115 = Jeremy's microfig scale #1
- 1x4 brick = 12' long
1:384 = Jeremy's microfig scale #2
- 1x4 brick = 40' long

(Measurements assume a 1x4 brick is 1.25" long.  Fractions of an inch are
rounded to nearest somethingth of an inch.  Sources include begmr@juno.com,
Frank Filz, Jim Rorstrom, Jeremy Sproat, Bryan Wong, probably others.)

Question:  How accurately does TLG scale the trains in comparison to the
minifig?  Given that minifig scale is 1:42, how close does the track gauge
come to real life?

Cheers,
- jsproat

It's not the same log.  It's not the same log.  It's not the same log.

(...) So far, that's: G scale = 1:22.5 - 1x4 brick = 2' 4" long Minifig scale = 1:42 - 1x4 brick = 4' 4.5" long O scale = 1:48 - 1x4 brick = 5' long S scale = 1:64 - 1x4 brick = 6' 8" long HO scale = 1:87.1 - 1x4 brick = 9' 1" long N scale = 1:160 - (...)
