If you don't like Lego as a medium, don't use it. :-) Decals are for
rebels who secretly wish they were modeling in a different medium.

I know you're half joking, but seriously...

Decals/stickers/prints can generally serve two purposes:

1) Represent painted-on patterns
2) Imitate structural details

My ideal policy would be to freely use decals for (1)
(it actually is more realistic to represent a picture by a  sticker/print
then building it into the wall)
but never use stickers for (2). For example I like the grilled 1x2 bricks
much better than the shingle print on large low slopes. I also dislike the
structures printed on yellow Aquashark hinged wall panel pieces. But I have
no problem with a brick preprinted 'police'.

If only TLG would stick to the same policy, I think we would be a lot more
happy.

Please note, this distinction is regardless using stickers or pre-printed
pieces. That is a purely practical distinction: on basic pieces it's
practical to have the pattern factory-printed because it doesn't wear like
stickers; on rare shaped pieces it's often better to have stickers so we
have the choice not to apply them.

So this begs the question:
Why should using LEGO-stickered or factory-printed pieces be more pure than
applying decals from the hobby shop (as long as we use it to represent
painted paterns, not structural details).
