Finally, I have ripped out the undercarriage on the 5561 4x4 and
rebuilding it Technic-style. I am using pieces primarily from the 8880
SuperCar; however, I have decided to use the smaller shock absorbers.
The real challenge here is how realistic can one build this. The 5561
body is not that long. I would like to provide 4-wheel drive, 4-wheel
independent suspension, and mid-mount V6 engine. However, I don't
think that I will have room to give it a real transmission, and a working
transfer case is questionable.

This is a nice project, I think.  One problem would be to get the
wheelbase narrow enough for the 5561 body.  I have a couple of ideas to
do this.

First, you can use the traditional 8880 suspension setup, but replace
the beams on each side of the differential with a halfbeam.  That way,
you can get each wheel one half stud closer to the center.  I used this
setup in a Lancia Stratos like model at

    http://www.math.uio.no/~fredrigl/technic/stratos/

So a total of one stud narrower isn't that much, is it?  Well, I have an
different method for getting the setup a full four studs narrower and
still gettting differential drive, independent suspension and steering.
Here's a description.  I hope it makes sense.

There is two a stud space between the universial joints in the center.
Inside there's two halfbeams to keep it all together, and in the very
centre there's two bevel gears facing outward.  Now, connect two bevel
gears to axles facing the same direction parallel to the driving
direction and put a differential directly into one of these.  The other
axle goes into the other side of the differential via two 16t cogs.
That way, powering the differential drives one wheel via the bevel gears,
and the other via two 16t cogs and then the bevel gears.

I have tried this in an experimental setup, and it works well.  But
remember that in this setup, the steering pinion is only six studs long,
so getting the steering to work properly is somewhat more involved.

I am currently working on a number of projects: The one project taking up most of my free time is a tower crane. It only stands a couple of feet high, but that is fine for mini-fig scale; however, it does use a lot of Technic pieces. The first phase (...) (26 years ago, 29-Sep-98, to lugnet.build)
