On the page, it says that due to the lower suspension arm being
shorter, the angle of the wheel changes a tiny bit with suspension
travel. I'm having trouble imagining which way the wheels would tilt,
but could this be adapted to provide significant tilt that evens out
the sideways shift of the wheel center as the suspension travels?

That's an interesting idea!  I've pondered a bit about this, and I think
the wheels tilt the correct way, but I'm not quite sure about it.  I'll
take a look at the model when I come home.

Now I understand why some car manufacturers advertise "unequal length
wishbones"!

Another idea - could one use the rotation of the axle that holds the
suspension arm to move the suspension in/out, to where the wheel does
not move sideways at all, without tilting it as above?

Perhaps it can be done, but I fear that it will make the suspension much
more complicated.  For the small wheels (compared with the 8880!), I
really need a sleek and compact suspension.
