Yes, this presupposes that I have a large collection of pieces, but that’s a
reasonable assumption for most kids...
So now I have to go build an 8-wide plane to show it can be done (1).

Agreed. But is there a point where the pieces are so large and so specialized
that it loses the creativity? That plane nose reminds me more of Playmobil than
an open-ended building toy.
