Hi folks,

the LDraw.org Administration Team would like to introduce a new contest. It will
be called:

POTM – Part Of The Month

It is no news that programs get most of the spotlight and little goes to "the
unsung heroes of the LDraw CAD world" - this contest should give more visibility
to the author's work. Proposed are two winners each month:

* Most desired part
* Best part

That way people can vote for parts that they are happy about due to their own
desire to use the parts, and also vote for the parts that took the most apparent
effort.

The contest roles would be:

* Allowed are all new parts which have been submitted to the LDraw Parts Tracker
the previous month. This would mean that all parts submitted in January would go
into the February contest.
* No obligation for the authors to take part at the contest.
* Authors which wish to enter their part to the contest MUST send a mail to the
contest coordinator indicating the part's PT link (example:
http://www.ldraw.org/cgi-bin/ptdetail.cgi?f=parts/2892.dat)
* The contest coordinator will match the entry against the first line in the PT
history (example: At Sat Jan 6 21:40:09 2007, the file was initially submitted.
Submitted by: bbroich) to make sure it is a new part and not a fix.
* The author MIGHT include a short COMMENT about the entry.
* Entries will be rendered by the contest coordinator in a standard view (in L3P
style global coordinates:<25,45,0>).
* Entry email subject line should contain, at a minimum, the words LDRAW.ORG
POTM ENTRY (capitalization not necessary).
* Entries must be submitted by the 27th of the month to be included in the
following month's voting.
* The voting is open to all registered LDraw users.

As you can see the formula is very close to the established MOTM.

Orion has already set up the ballot module for the new contest and we are ready
to run the first contest in February. Please comment if you feel we missed
something.

w.

(...) I think it's a great idea to put the part authors in the spot light. But isn't one view a bit limited? Especially for the more complex / non symmetrical parts. Just my 2 cents :) Roland (18 years ago, 14-Jan-07, to lugnet.cad.dev.org.ldraw)

This is a really great idea... But I find it a little difficult to see how you can participate unless you're one of the small handfull of reviewers with a constant level of high activity: If you aren't paying really close attention to the PT on a (...) In lugnet.announce, Willy Tschager wrote: Neat idea! (...) Note that this doesn't stop someone submitting an update of a part that already exists (in the official library). I actually think that's good - major reworks of existing parts *should* be (...) (18 years ago, 27-Jan-07, to lugnet.cad.dev.org.ldraw)
