You're surprised that people are showing respect for LEGO's privacy?

I'm surprised we don't see more "leaked" photos as well.  Lugnet chooses to
play by TLC's rules, but 99.999% of the toy community freely posts and
discusses leaked pictures, company plans, etc.  And overall, the toy companies
have begun responding not by tightening up restrictions, but by giving fans
more legitimate access to their upcoming products.

Just as one example- I regularly buy a magazine called ToyFare, which features
upcoming products, photos of prototypes, photos of initial sculptures in
progress, etc- all supplied by toy companies who realise that drumming up fan
interest is a way to improve sales.

In this same magazine, two months ago, I read about the fabulous 2001 line of
Star Wars toys- a tiny little blurb, accompanied by no photograph, probably
written because one of the staff writers finally got ahold of a catalogue from
a set.  That doesn't seem like very good business.

Another example- over on Hasbro's website, you can read about what figures
they've decided to make, vote on figures they're thinking about making, etc-
all of which is a stark contrast to about 1996, when they started making SW
figs again.

It's more than unfair that a few people already own these sets while
others are not even allowed to see pictures of them, geez!

Are you saying that other people have already bought these sets and/or
pieces through legitimate retail channels?  I find that hard to imagine,
given the JPIII isn't out yet and these sets haven't even appeared in a
catalog yet.

That's not a photo of parts from a JP3 set.  It's photos of parts from a
dinosaur set (I don't know the "real" theme name, I think it might just have
been "Dinosaurs").  They look like great sets, and I can't wait to buy them.

Since they're in a retailer catalogue, I can only imagine that the parts exist.
That shot is not from the retailer catalogue.

Even if it were, experience has proven time and time again that LEGO's claims
that the retailer catalogue shouldn't be seen by fans are spurious, at the very
best.  It's not the same person posting this stuff year after year after year,
it's different people.  And they aren't store owners or workers, either.

Although these new large dinosaurs are not [...] and that really gets
boring after a while! [...] and other things)...

When you talk about details like this, be aware that you might very likely
be breaking LUGNET's Discussion Group Terms and Conditions, which requires
that you do not violate the privacy rights of others.  I am not a lawyer and
I cannot give you legal advice, but if I were you I would be considering the
potential consequences of my actions very carefully as I go forward.

I didn't see the photos from the retailer catalogue on the net.  I held the
retailer's catalogue in my hands and read through it.  I was nowhere near a
retail store when I did it.  Are you really saying that I can't make posts
like:

http://news.lugnet.com/publish/cinema/?n=151

and discuss the details of it?

Information, by it's very nature, wants to be free.

Hopefully, the mysterious retailer images will be out in consumer-format
soon, which should make it a lot easier for us to talk about these things.

It shouldn't make it easier -- it should make it possible.  You shouldn't be
talking about stuff like this publicly if LEGO doesn't approve of it.

We shouldn't be talking about it publicly?  No offense, but I'll assume you
meant we shouldn't be posting about it to Lugnet.

(...) LEGO could say for sure whether or not it's an invasion of their privacy and/or publicity rights. IANAL, but it seems like it's walking a thin line. Personally, I'd err on the side of not posting here about that level of detail, because then (...) (23 years ago, 6-Feb-01, to lugnet.animation)
