May I suggest you peruse HERE. In the menu bar you will find links to an Acro FAQ and some other goodies as well which will help bring you up to speed, as it were.

Ah yes, that does help. I don’t know what you mean by “menu bar” but I do see the acronym link in the list of topics on the FAQ page.

Would it be more clear if it were called “sidebar”? What is meant is the stuff on the left side of the page (the right side has the list of 4 most recent posts, the top has the most common tasks and the bottom the legalish stuff)

I have been calling it the group header but Todd reminded me that’s not right. It’s maintained by the group’s curator.

But how would I find that from the lugnet.com main page? ...Ah, I see, it’s one of the newsgroups. I didn’t expect to find it there; if there were FAQ resources, I expected to find them under “Guide” at the top of every page (or, if it makes more sense, a separate item at the top of every page, next to “Home” and “Guide”).

It’s related to a newsgroup because, somewhat like Wiki, the FAQ entries themselves come from the readership, and are harvested from posts to the newsgroup and transferred into the FAQ proper.

But I agree that a better linkage would help, and I agree with Bruce, keep those questions and suggestions coming!

Or at the very least, the home page should have a prominent “New user? Start here!” link, which points out the FAQ. I’ve been surfing the web since it was Gopher, and run several web sites of my own, but still found lugnet to be rather easy to get lost in. (I’m starting to get used to it now though.)

Quick, give us more suggestions before you get used to it!

++Lar (who remembers using gopher although I never ran a gopher server)
