On the one hand, if the policy is a newsgroup for each theme,

FYI, there is no such policy.

Oh, my bad.  I thought there was because in a recent discussion (on making a
monsters or studios group) someone suggested getting rid of some of the
low-traffic groups (I believe they specifically mentioned .underground) and
someone else responded that this was a Lego theme and as such deserved a
newsgroup.  So I thought that was the policy.

Planning of  the compartmentalized-dork kind is more of an art than a
science. Many factors are taken into consideration. After that, there's a
"gut feeling"  yea or nay. Then there's some continued observation.

Quite understandable.

(and this is presumably why  there is a Galidor group).

Do you feel that group is not needed? (curious)

Oh, I'm not down on the group itself, I'm more down on the Galidor products.
I think they're so far outside what I think of as "Lego" that they don't
really fit.  That said, though, I agree that any Galidor discussion that
might occur will need a home of its own, to avoid stirring up the ire of others.
I'm a relatively recent (6 months) Lugnet member, but I would assume there
was a similar influx of new posters clashing with System builders when
Bionicle was first introduced.  For instance there was a big discussion a
while back of whether Bionicle (and especially icons for Bionicle Zone)
belonged on Brickshelf (which resulted in the quite helpful categorization
of Brickshelf).
