Hey,

I do think there are some potential administrative “solutions” (assuming that all agreed that this was a problem). The weightings of .announce posts or .off-topic could be adjusted up- or downwards to increase MOC discussion. The idea of being unable to spotlight responses (as opposed to original posts) is also an interesting one. The only downside I can see to this is that there is the occasional thread where some initial rumor or rant starts a thread, and somewhere downthread there is a response by Jake that gives some official information. In those cases I think the official response is much more important to the community than the initial rumor (e.g. I think that Jake’s statement about the KKII line came in response to a thread started by rumors surrounding some leaked set names, though my chronology might be off here).

More constructively, I just wanted to second Lar and Simon’s posts about encouraging people to spotlight MOCs and other such posts. In the current top ten highlights, 4 are related to responses to TLC (3 on the color issue, one “attaboy Jake”). All of these got ten or more votes to spot- or highlight. Of the remaining 6 threads on MOCs (every one of them very cool, and spanning all sorts of themes), only one of them topped ten votes. C’mon, is there any reason why Kyle Vrieze’s Aggressor didn’t get spotlighted by every .space poster? There were only four votes, and one of those was by me, a total castle guy.

The take home message here is that it only takes a very few people to tip the highlighting list one way or the other. If only ten more regular Lugnet posters went through .announce.moc once a week and spotlighted their favorite creations, there would be no need for any administrative solution to “fix” the highlighting.

Bruce

I don't have time to do an exhaustive search of this newsgroup to see if this issue has been resolved, but I know it has come up. Please let me know if this is old news that doesn't need to come up anymore. But, can we do something about these (...) (20 years ago, 20-Jan-05, to lugnet.admin.suggestions)
