The problem with this approach is that cancels are not honored. If a
person posts a message, and then regrets and cancels it, it will still
be posted to all the SMTP subscribers. A new, corrected version of
the same article will then be perceived from the SMTP subscribers as
posted in addition to the original, canceled one.
There's also the issue of filters. You can set up an NNTP server to
only accept certain posts to avoid downloading all messages. And
should you subscribe to a new group, you can easily choose to download
the 100 latest articles, say, to get a grip on what the discussions in
the group are about. I don't know if these things are easy with the
SMTP method.
Besides, I suppose some people prefer to use a newsreader for a news
medium. It makes a lot of things easier.
BTW, your posts have very long line lengths. This makes them hard to
read.

| (...) why not just work in SMTP then? subscribe to all the groups, set up procmail (if you have it) or other mail filters to drop the messages in the right folders, and reply via smtp... it'll be queued and you can flush the queue whenever you're (...)
