Hello Todd,

thanks for outlining a bit of your current thinking:

I think it's "safe" enough, and fairly straightforward to implement, but it
would be pretty slow to pass multiple articles through on a single form
click, due to the way the HTTP server talks to the NNTP server, and I'd be
worried about people hitting Stop or Esc when it goes past 5 seconds.  An
intermediate solution might be to display the articles one-by-one and
advance to the next one when the Post It button is clicked, or maybe to do
that in groups of three articles, or something.

One additional thought for that: Would it be necessary to show the full
article? For me, just the title and the first and last few lines would be
enough to know whether or not it is from me in most cases. This is
especially true when I can have all pending articles on one page. There
could be links to show each individual full article when necessary.

I want to implement an email-based confirmation first, though, before
thinking about ways to make the HTTP/web-based confirmation simpler.  Right
now, people who use purely e-mail and don't have easy web access could
really benefit from that, and it's really straightforward.

I like those priorities.

I've got an offer to help with a PGP implementation too -- which would/could
help a lot for both NNTP(news) and SMTP(email) users, although then an
additional support issue arises of maintaining a database of valid PGP keys.

I like this one even better, as you probably know. I can see the support
issue, which probably takes additional effort to solve in an automated way.
After all, it is essential to be able to switch ones public key from time to
time, or when it is suspected that the private key has been exposed. Now,
how can this be done automatically, yet secure? Not an easy one. On the
other hand, since this has to be done far less frequently than news posting,
it could be a bit more work, and potentially require using a web interface.

Greetings

Horst

(...) I like that idea, maybe something like you have on the browser interface in "brief" mode, but with a button to view the entire message if possible, just in case the brief version isn't enough. ROSCO (23 years ago, 21-Jun-01, to lugnet.admin.nntp)

(...) I agree that the web interface would be best for this. We're not trying to replace it completely, just to remove it as a step from each posting. If people had to fire up the browser whenever their key changes, I really don't think anyone would (...) (23 years ago, 21-Jun-01, to lugnet.admin.nntp)

(...) That would be cool. It would require keeping an index of yet-unconfirmed articles on a person-by-person basis (it doesn't currently track this) and just including that, or looking it up on-the-fly based on one of them. (...) I think it's (...) (23 years ago, 20-Jun-01, to lugnet.admin.nntp)
