What about having subsequent authentication emails put multiple
authentication numbers into the URL if other posts from the same user are
awaiting authentication?  This way it would be possible to put several posts
into the "outbox" and review all of them at once via a single URL click.

That would be cool.  It would require keeping an index of yet-unconfirmed
articles on a person-by-person basis (it doesn't currently track this) and
just including that, or looking it up on-the-fly based on one of them.

Each post could be displayed with a set of buttons placed next to each one
(or perhaps checkboxes beside each message and one set of buttons).  It
would work similar to the way a web-based email reader works (like AOL's
web-based email, anyway).  And only the messages referred to by the several
authentication numbers posted to the website would be displayed.

Anyway, it's just an idea that occurred to me.  Todd, if you are listening,
what do you think?

I think it's "safe" enough, and fairly straightforward to implement, but it
would be pretty slow to pass multiple articles through on a single form
click, due to the way the HTTP server talks to the NNTP server, and I'd be
worried about people hitting Stop or Esc when it goes past 5 seconds.  An
intermediate solution might be to display the articles one-by-one and
advance to the next one when the Post It button is clicked, or maybe to do
that in groups of three articles, or something.

I want to implement an email-based confirmation first, though, before
thinking about ways to make the HTTP/web-based confirmation simpler.  Right
now, people who use purely e-mail and don't have easy web access could
really benefit from that, and it's really straightforward.

I've got an offer to help with a PGP implementation too -- which would/could
help a lot for both NNTP(news) and SMTP(email) users, although then an
additional support issue arises of maintaining a database of valid PGP keys.

(...) can't just fork the job to the background, say "It's done!", so the user can go on it's way, and the server take it's sweet (niced :) time posting the articles? (23 years ago, 20-Jun-01, to lugnet.admin.nntp)

Hello Todd, thanks for outlining a bit of your current thinking: (...) One additional thought for that: Would it be necessary to show the full article? For me, just the title and the first and last few lines would be enough to know whether or not it (...) (23 years ago, 21-Jun-01, to lugnet.admin.nntp)
