?

You should choose the groups you think pertain most to the post. If you
think all new-yorkers may have useful information, then maybe
lugnet.loc.us.ny.ny & lugnet.loc.us.ny.ny.man. I think any wider would
probably be viewed by most as "undesirable" (certainly by me - but I
wouldn't have seen it anyway).

Note that in this case, as you pointed out, it's likely that some people who
only read .loc.us.ny using the web interface would have read the post, and
may have responded with information. This is just the luck of the draw,
though. You shouldn't rely on this feature - when I cross-post, I assume
everyone's using a news-reader.

I have little experience with news group and common Internet rules and I've
been reading LUGNET only using the web interface [1]. Maybe someone with more
knowledge will disagree, but at least to me the whole group hierarchy carries
also an intuitive meaning that is implied by the structure.
When I posted to lugnet.loc.us.ny.ny.man it never occurred to me to post to
any other parent group. I just assumed that anyone reading the higher groups
will be interested in what I have to say (or he wouldn't be reading those
groups).

I feel that this intuitive feeling just doesn't hold in the technic-bionicle
case.
I someone is interested in robotics he will be glad to know what's new with
the RCX and that perhaps LegOs has some new exciting feature that'll make him
start using it. On the other hand, if someone is interested in space he may
not (probably not) be interested in trains. If he is he'll have to read both
news groups.
I feel that this is exactly the case with bionicles. If some loves Technic in
most cases (I think...) he's not interested in bionicles. If he is interested
in both he's interested in technic _and_ in bionicles. The 'and' here is just
like the 'and' between space and trains and therefor I feel that there should
be a different group. If people in the technic group will start screening the
bionicle posts according to the title (like I do - see one of my previous
posts) I think it's a sign that the group structure has somehow failed in that
case.

[snip]
... Start making too many rules, and people just
won't bother posting.

That's exactly my point - I think the system must be intuitive and simple or
no one will bother to use it [2]. In this case I think the most helpful
structure will be to remove the Bionicle group from the Technic group.
Otherwise you have to rely more on people posting *exactly* to where they are
supposed to and being familiar with all the details of the interface
(filtering etc.).

[1] I wonder what percentage of the people uses only the web interface
(anyone?) - maybe the majority uses other readers and my problem is limited to
a handful of people.

[2] I have to admit that I haven't read big parts of the Terms of Use, but
still I have been reading LUGNET for a year now, enjoying it and even posting
without making too many mistakes (at least that I'm aware of). That's exactly
because the use is intuitive and simple.
