(...) while good, this still doesn't solve the general problem of spam off lugnet. How about hiding posting email addresses on messages posted, except for members? Just have it say "From: Dan_Boger@luget.com" or just "From: (...) (24 years ago, 26-May-00, to lugnet.admin.general)

(...) then all the mail spammers send would be going directly to lugnet, something i don't think any of us want (especially the sysadmins!). spammers generally don't handpick e-mail addresses, they usually harvest them from the web or newsgroups or (...) (24 years ago, 26-May-00, to lugnet.admin.general)

(...) First of all, in this case, it seems like the spammer just replied to any message he could find in lugnet... As for the spam going to the newsgroups, it can (and it does) only if the poster has gone through the mail setup procedure. Otherwise, (...) (24 years ago, 26-May-00, to lugnet.admin.general)

(...) Email addresses are a fundamental element of the NNTP & SMTP header paradigms. Although (in theory) it would be very easy to 'hide' email addresses from non-members via the web interface, it's much less practical via SMTP and almost completely (...) (24 years ago, 26-May-00, to lugnet.admin.general)
