6. Change your server config to transparently ignore messages crossposted to
valid lugnet groups and RTL.
My guess is that people doing this (maybe I'm giving people too much
credit?) have some setup (like a caching server) where they can in fact post
to both groups. Since this is generally valid, most public news servers
accept this, even though they don't carry the lugnet hierarchy. The problem
is with LUGnet, which rejects these messages.
Messages posted from (private, caching nnrp servers) could then show up in
both RTL and LUGnet. People who just have access to RTL can ignore the
LUGnet aspect, people who just read on LUGnet can ignore the RTL part, and
people who have caching servers or some equivalent config will see the
messages as crossposted.
This has the downside of being sorta confusing to newbies, but has the
upside of being the way it's supposed to work. :)

My theory is that people trying to do this are in fact posting their
messages to LUGnet and having them rejected (because of the reference to
rtl). Am I wrong?
If I am, then one of your #5 options sounds good. Probably the one that just
automatically trolls RTL for crossposted messages.
I'm kind of concerned about the potential for confusion introduced by having
only some "special" RTL messages show up here. At the worst, that seems
destructive to RTL -- if I only read it here (which would certainly be the
most convenient) I'll never see posts by newbies. Who will in turn wonder
why everone is ignoring them.

| (...) Ah yes, that sounds like a very good idea. The reason it's rejecting articles posted to non-groups now is because people can misspell something -- and it's better to give them an immediate error message than to silently file the article in (...) | As of today, there have been half a doezn posts to rec.toys.lego already which were crossposted to one or more lugnet.* newsgroups. Of course, those messages will never make it here because this server doesn't carry rec.toys.lego and doesn't (...) (26 years ago, 26-Oct-98, to lugnet.admin.general)
