On the Traffic Page you color code the numbers to indicate recent
posts.  This would be a great feature to implement in the dots of the
message tree display.

Something along the lines of different color dot for messages of ages
less than 1 day old, 2 days old, 3 days old, 7 days old, and older than
7 days.  This would be useful when deciding where in the tree to go to
find new messages since the last visit.

I wanted to do that, but although you can temporarily override the LINK and
VLINK color inline with <FONT COLOR=...>, you can't temporarily override
them separately inline.  (At least not to the best of my knowledge; maybe
there's some CSS extension for that.)

So the boxes would no longer tell you whether you've visited an article.

On the other hand, if the little tiny 3x3-pixel dot image itself at the
centers of the larger box were presented in multiple colors and the link
border colorings were left alone, then you could see which articles you've
already visited, and you could also see how old/new an article was.  Then
the issues would be (a) whether the colors for article age worked against
whatever LINK and VLINK colors people happen to have set in their browser
configuration, and (b) whether it's worth the extra bandwidth and httpd
log bloat to serve multiple different image 3x3-pixel files.

Rather than color coded, perhaps shape encoded (squares, circles, triangles,
etc...) would be easier to implement.  You still have issue (b), but bandwidth
for a few small images is minimal.  I don't follow the log bloat issue, but
assume it is something on your end invisible to users.

I'm used to Compuserve's high message number tracking at the host end, but
I don't think it's feasible at your site.  (ie. Automatically tracking the
highest message number read by each user in each newsgroup and then only
serving up messages in that group with higher numbers.  The user can set the
HMN to any number they want in order to view old messages if desired.)

   Thanks for listening.
