Perhaps the homepage presentation can later be a user-selectable

Why not have two home pages, index.html which would be the friendly one,
with a link at the bottom to the "power" home page, home.html or
power.html? Sounds like a good idea.

I think that could get us part of the way there, but I think it also creates
additional problems.

If there were two highly visible URLs for the homepage, then:

1.  Experienced/power users would have to click that link each time they
wanted the expert page in place of the friendly page.  While they could
simply bookmark the expert page instead of the friendly page, everywhere
else on the site (and off the site, for that matter) the links to the
homepage would go to the wrong spot for them.

2.  Experienced/power users would no longer be able to type in simply
"lugnet" or "goto lugnet" into the Open Location dialog box of their
browser (if their browser supports that).  Instead, it would go to the
    default homepage.

3.  People may actually start giving links from their pages to the power-user
URL rather than the real URL.  That would defeat the purpose of having a
    friendly default.

There is currently a half-hacked power-user add-on page that puts everything
in frame, so that set-searches work properly in MSIE (it's a temporary hack/
workaround).  If you go to <http://www.lugnet.com/poweruser.cgi>, you can
see what I mean.

It's a little CGI script rather than a static HTML page, so that the HTTP
referrer can be checked against.  If an off-site link is made to that URL,
then it auto-forwards to the real homepage, in order to prevent propagation
of the wrong URL for the site.  (But if it's from a local filesystem, then
the browser typically sends the referrer as blank, so it doesn't redirect.)

The most elegant solution, of course, is just to know the user's preference
for how they enjoy the homepage, and display one or the other from the same
URL.
